Water transport still alive in Kashmir

The means of transportation might have drastically changed in the valley since decades, yet some people even today love to commute by traditional means of water transport.

A walk along the bund of river Jhelum gives a glimpse of this surviving water transport and the way people use it. In the morning and evening hours a good number of people can be noted commuting by shikara to and from river bund. In the day times the number of commuters is less.

“I have been using shikara for going to my office since years. I follow the same habit even today, despite owing a car,” said Rafiq Ahmad, a commuter.

Shameema Khan, a teacher said she loves traveling by shikara.“It keeps away pollution and saves environment. Besides, it’s a lovely experience,” said Shameema adding that water transport saves from irksome traffic jams.

Shikara plying along the river have however reduced due to the coming up of the Foot Bridge and popularization of other transportation. Only countable number of shikara’s can be seen waiting for commuters. Besides officer goers, students are the common users of this water transport which is also a cheaper means of commuting.

“I have to get my daughter from school everyday. I never take my car but go by shikara because if I go by car it will take me hours to reach due to traffic mess,” said Bashir Ahmad, a shopkeeper.

“It is cheaper to travel by shikara than by bus. It is the best modes of traveling and people should use it increasingly,” Naushaad, an employee.

Nevertheless the shikara wallas are running in losses and fear extinction of this culture of water transport. The business of the shikara wallas was particularly hit by Foot Bridge.

“When there was no Foot Bridge, we would do wonderful business. But after this bridge came up, we suffered tremendously,” said Abdul Ahad, shikara wala Many of the shikaras which would ply near Foot Bridge lost their means of income. Those plying at other places survived somewhat. They are surviving due to the commuters presently using water transport.“We earn very less but at least we have something in hand. We want people to using shikara for commuting so that we can also survive well,” Ahad says.

Ryanair to use Chinese planes

Ryanair has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC acronym in English) for the development of C919 aircraft, reports' Bloomberg '.

Ryanair will share his experience and knowledge to help the Chinese manufacturer to develop the new C919 airliner with capacity for 200 passengers, which would allow the Irish low cost airline "reduce costs and continue lowering rates."

Slathia reviews arrangements for Chamliyal mela

Minister for Industries and Commerce, Surjeet Singh Slathia today reviewed arrangements for upcoming Mela at Baba Chamliyal shrine at Ramgarh Border area at an officers meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that shrines in the State and country are symbols of composite culture and heritage and people must strive to uphold the ethos and transfer the same to the future generations. He said that such type of events give people an opportunity to interact with the each other and helps in mutual understanding and strengthening brotherhood.

Mr Slathia directed for foolproof security and other arrangements. He asked the district administration to make available adequate number of buses for the devotees during the Mela, besides putting in place all facilities for the convenience of the visitors at the site of Mela. The setting up of a control room for the smooth conduct of the mela was also stressed upon.

Earlier, District Development Commissioner, Samba Mubarak Singh, gave a detailed account of arrangements made for the Mela by all the line departments including PHE, PDD, PWD, Traffic Police, Motor Vehicle and Tourism Departments.

He said all the departments have already initiated the works assigned to them.

He also informed that developmental departments like Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Health, Education, Employment, Handicrafts, Handloom, Floriculture, Tourism, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry would install stalls for highlighting the developmental activities of their respective departments and also disseminate the information related to employment schemes for the benefit of unemployed youth.

SSP Samba, Israr Khan who was also present in the meeting informed that all required steps will be taken for security and maintaining law and order, while 50 traffic personnel are being deployed for regulation of traffic on various routes leading to Chamliyal.

The Commandant, BSF Hemant Kumar informed that two Companies of BSF Personnel will be deployed for maintaining security and facilitating the smooth conduct of the Mela.
