Darius manuscripts removed from auction

Nine manuscripts auctioned Ruben Dario stopped in Madrid because the owner of them felt that the crisis would prevent 130,000 euros get set for the lot.

Titled "The crisis leaves 900 documents auctioned Ruben Dario," the weekly magazine El Cultural, distributed by the newspaper El Mundo reported in its issue of December 31 last year, the lot, which includes letters, poems and receipts, among others, it was auctioned at the request of the owner.

Manuscripts of Darius was the cover of the catalog of the auction scheduled to be held on 22 December.

"They have from The Shooting (publication) specializing in books and manuscripts, the owner of the collection has decided to withdraw the bid a few days before the meeting for fear of failing to achieve a fair price, such is the fear that lurks today sellers. According to the auction house could have climb to 150,000 euros, "said El Cultural.

Javier Varas, responsible for the auction house The Shooting, told El Nuevo Diario through an email, that professional secrecy and asked the owner of the manuscripts, would not give details on the lot.

According to Darío Jorge Eduardo Arellano, "most of these cases 900 manuscripts, and are published in a book called 'Papers Ruben Dario', whose compiler is Demorizi Emilio Rodríguez, a Dominican intellectual was Ambassador (Rafael Leonidas) Trujillo for Somoza. "

The book, said Arellano, was published in 1952 and is based on manuscripts obtained by Alejandro Bermudez, who was an intellectual of Masaya who accompanied Darius on his journey from Barcelona to New York to preach peace, and who left him in New York when the poet was ill with pneumonia.

"Bermudez's widow gave the documents. There is, for example, all that Darius spent. It is strongly suspected (the papers that would be auctioned) are false, "Arellano said.

However, the news editor of The Cultural told El Nuevo Diario that although not sure about the authenticity of the manuscripts, they know that they were certified by a specialist from the University Complutense of Madrid.

The lot, he added, containing mostly letters and receipts. Some letters were sent to then-President Jose Santos Zelaya, including one in which he thanked the appointment as consul in Madrid, and others directed to consuls, ministers, and several Mexican writer Amado Nervo.

The co-CEO of the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture, Inc., Luis Morales, said that many of the manuscripts that circulate on the outside and are not in museums, are false.

"We have no knowledge (about the manuscripts), but be careful. A final manuscript that appeared in South America was studied here, reviewed by local people and Ruben Dario Museum Archive was not authentic. Dario's original work is in museums, what circulates is not original, "said Morales.

More details

The daily added that the manuscripts were collected by Alejandro Bermúdez, with whom Darius traveled from Spain to America in a journey for peace.

"Then in the 30's, autographs passed to his son, Raul Bermudez de Baca, a lawyer and historian, who decided to guard them for 60 years until his death in 1995," it said.

"Other relevant documents include the letter to Francisco Castro (July 3, 1882), in which Darius says that the contents thereof must not be known by anyone other than the recipient, and which speaks of their situation at that time and their future plans. It also includes the collection of the poet's family correspondence, with letters sent from Paris to Francisca Sanchez, his wife, throughout 1903, "he added.

The cultural magazine that circulates every Thursday said in his note that perhaps the most important part of the lot are the leaves by Darius signed and numbered by hand, which are part of his work.

"For example, the compositions Autumn Poem (four pages written by eight faces) and Oh! Regards, dedicated to Amado Nervo. There are also texts Navarro Ledesma, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Paul Grousac ... Moreover, the last time the poet passed through New York is reflected in the great cosmopolitan city, a poem that is included with other texts such as Beauty, Books strange, I know I am, The lace, butterfly and flower, Sonatina .. . ".

The student of the work of Darius and professor at the University of Sevilla, Noel Rivas, considered it very important legitimizing the authorship of these documents.

According to the note of the Cultural, the manuscripts were considered by the University as "not bad". "The truth is that they belong to a time of life of Darius in which the poet consuming alcohol, so that his handwriting mutates considerably depending on the mood to write with," concludes the text.
